Participants gain simple, actionable tools to improve workplace relationships, handle challenges constructively, and create a more supportive, productive site environment.

This practical, half-day course equips construction professionals with the skills and confidence to effectively mentor, support and develop young people and apprentices on site.

Designed to address key industry challenges, including apprentice retention, skills shortages, supervisor capability, and generational differences, the course provides a structured and realistic approach to workplace mentoring within fast-paced construction environments.

Participants will explore how effective mentoring can improve productivity, strengthen site culture, and increase apprentice retention. The course focuses on building communication skills, understanding the realities facing young workers today, and applying simple, practical frameworks that can be used immediately on site.

Through a blend of case studies, group discussions and interactive exercises, delegates will learn how to handle common workplace scenarios, respond constructively to challenges, and create a more supportive and high-performing environment for young workers.

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the value of mentoring in addressing apprentice retention, improving workforce sustainability, and strengthening team performance
  • Apply practical mentoring techniques to support and develop young people effectively within a construction environment
  • Adapt communication styles to work more effectively across different generations and with diverse learning needs
  • Recognise and respond to common challenges faced by young workers, including wellbeing, confidence and external pressures
  • Use structured approaches to feedback and conversations, including the 5Cs mentoring framework
  • Demonstrate a “curious first” mindset when dealing with challenging behaviour, improving outcomes and relationships
  • Balance operational demands with supportive leadership, maintaining productivity, safety and engagement
  • Apply restorative approaches to manage conflict, rebuild trust and improve behaviour on site
  • Identify when issues require escalation and respond appropriately to safeguard both individuals and the organisation
